Open media technology is becoming increasingly relevant in a world where we find more information online than in our local library, and where online technology provides us with a means to easily stay in contact with all our social and professional networks. The visual dimension has become highly important through sites such as YouTube and applications such as Skype video.
However - we are only seeing the beginning of a transformation that will turn the Web from a predominantly textual experience into a predominantly audio-visual experience. It will happen because the use of visual and aural sense for communication are much more natural to humankind than text.
Technology will and must evolve with the requirements of this new online audience. The HTML5 video tag is a first step in the right direction. With it, Web publishers are empowered to make use of video in a more integral fashion.
